Cambodia to Donate 200,000 Doses of Covid-19 Vaccine to Vietnam

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has announced that the Royal Government will help Vietnam in its fight against the pandemic. The kingdom is to donate 200,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to its neighbour on Friday.

Secretary of State in the Ministry of Health and Chairwoman of the Commission for Covid-19 Vaccination, Or Vandine, has confirmed the donation. She will preside over the delivery in person at the Bavet-Moc Bai border gate in Svay Rieng province on Friday morning.

Currently, Vietnam has administered only one dose of vaccine to 53% of its population. Only 21% are fully-vaccinated. Unlike Cambodia, the Vietnamese government has been reluctant to accept vaccines from China for long-standing political reasons. It has been researching a homegrown vaccine called Nanovax, but with delays and a lack of effective results, Hanoi has now decided to start distributing Chinese vaccines such as Sinovac, which is the kind Cambodia has the most of in stock.

Vietnam will not be the first ASEAN country which Cambodia has helped in the fight against the pandemic. The kingdom recently donated 200,000 doses of Sinovac to Laos. Myanmar, Timor Leste and Nepal are other countries Cambodia has helped with cash, facemasks and medical supplies.
